PDT is a safe and effective way to target abnormal or unhealthy skin cells, localized to specific parts of the body. This treatment has a proven track record eliminating cancerous and precancerous cells, including those linked with skin cancer. Treatments can be localized to the parts of the body where these abnormal cells are present.
How Does PDT Work?
PDT therapy begins with an oral medication. This medication is called a photosensitizer, and on its own it is non-toxic and ineffective. Only when the target treatment area is exposed to a therapeutic light source, such as a laser or LED, do these photosensitizers activate, triggering a reaction that damages nearby cells.
PDT is not only safe but painless. Sessions take just a few minutes, and most patients need two or three sessions spaced several weeks apart.
Aftercare
Following a PDT treatment, you will need to keep the treatment area dry for about 48 hours, also avoiding scratching or knocking it. It is also important to keep the treated area out of any direct or indirect sunlight, blue light, or bright indoor lights.
